It refers to the practice of providing free, immediate, and unrestricted online access to peer-reviewed research publications (e.g., journal articles, conference papers, theses, and book chapters). Unlike traditional publishing models, where readers or their institutions pay subscriptions, Open Access ensures that research is available to everyone, regardless of their institutional affiliation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Detailed Explanation:<\/strong>\u00a0Traditional academic publishing places high-cost barriers on research, restricting access to wealthy institutions. This model hinders the rapid dissemination of knowledge and excludes researchers in developing regions. Open Access removes these barriers, prioritizing the public good by treating knowledge as a common resource. It fundamentally supports the democratization of knowledge.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Importance in Open Science:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Greater Visibility and Impact:<\/strong>\u00a0OA articles are downloaded and cited more frequently than non-OA articles.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rapid Dissemination:<\/strong>\u00a0Research findings are shared immediately, speeding up the scientific process.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Public Engagement:<\/strong>\u00a0Practitioners, policymakers, and the public can directly access and benefit from evidence-based research.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The UPSI Open Science initiative seeks to formalize OA as part of its Policy &amp; Process. By establishing a designated Platform (the Data Repository\/Aggregator based on the repository system), the university will host and showcase its intellectual output, providing a clear path for UPSI researchers to publish their work as Open Access. The upcoming RDM Policy will enshrine this, and initial awareness is being built through Institutional Repositories.<\/p>\n<h2>\n\t\t\tEmpowering Research Through Open Access\t<\/h2>\n\t<p>In support of Open Science, we provide free and unrestricted access to institutional research via our UPSI Digital Repository (UDRep) at <b data-path-to-node=\"14,0\" data-index-in-node=\"137\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ir.upsi.edu.my\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-hveid=\"0\" data-ved=\"0CAAQ_4QMahcKEwiK9qD-wqaWAxUAAAAAHQAAAAAQTw\">ir.upsi.edu.my<\/a><\/b>.
